We are having an in-school field trip on Monday April 12th. We will be wet felting a birds nest to finish our building unit.

We have enjoyed our time with our Student Teacher Ms. Bello. Next Friday April 16th will be her last day, but we hope that she will come back and substitute teach for us. 

Don't forget to dress for the weather. We have had a few students who have been chilly at recess because they haven't brought jackets.

A friendly reminder to please be safe and use the crosswalks. Crosswalks are supervised in the mornings from 8:00am - 8:15am and after school from 3:01pm - 3:15pm. We want our kids to be safe.

 Dear Room 5 families:

What a wonderful week we have had. 

The students are working hard in math on place value. We are using base 10 blocks (flat, rod, cube) and coins (nickel, dime, quarter, loonie, toonie) to understand the value within numbers (i.e. 243 - the 2 is 2 flats and worth 200, 4 is 4 rods and worth 40, 3 is 3 ones and worth 3). We have been practicing skip counting with money as well (2, 5, 10, 25). I have suggested to the kids to practice making change to practice their skip counting skills, or to have a  skip counting number battle with you (counting back and forth). 

In Language Arts we have started reading the book called A boy Called Bat by Elana K. Arnold. We are working on character traits for the characters and exploring new words within the book, along with responding to the chapters read in our writing journal.

In science we are finishing up animal life cycles. We are working at becoming geologists by looking into rocks and minerals. The students were impressed to learn that rocks have life cycles too, and that some common every day items such as salt and some ingredients in toothpaste are minerals.

In social studies we are continuing to look at all kinds of maps and develop our mapping skills. We learned about cardinal directions along with map legends or keys, and what the symbols on them mean. 

The students have enjoyed learning and remembering how to access and maneuver around in our grade 3 google classroom. Feel free to explore our google classroom and get a peak into what we are doing in our in-person classroom. Most weeks, I post slides that outline what we are learning about and doing in class. If students are absent from in-person learning, they may access our google classroom to complete missed assignments (but only when they are feeling well enough). I sent out students email's and passwords earlier this week, so please let me know if you didn't get them or if your having trouble accessing google classroom. Please take the opportunity to explore it when you have a moment, so that you become comfortable if or when we need to use it.  

We are also using computers to complete research tasks in science and social, along with using prodigy and epic for language arts and math. Students benefit tremendously from headphones for these activities. Due to various health concerns schools do not provide students with these, so if its possible to send some to school I will ensure they are kept in their desks and that they are not to be shared. 

We are learning that having extra masks at school is very important for a few reasons. Masks malfunction and/or break, so it is nice to have a backup. Wearing our masks outside on the playground in winter weather creates moisture, and our masks become somewhat uncomfortable to wear when we get back inside. This holds true for phys. ed. as well, due to increased breathing while we are running around. Having a separate mask for these activities makes for more comfortable students,  so if it is possible students should have at least 2 masks for the school day.

Winter Celebration of Learning

Hello Cappy Smart Families,

As many of you know, each of our grades host an event (such as Remembrance Day) or a “celebration of learning” assembly at some time throughout the year. December will be a sharing event around some of the work being done in our music classes. While this is NOT a formal concert, parents are welcome to join us to hear what the students have been working on.

To make sure that we are able to include all of our Kindergarten students, we are having two assemblies, the music will be the same at both.

If you are looking for something for your child to do instead of technology, the following are some activities and independent learning projects to consider.  Independent learning projects are not part of the classroom curriculum and will not be marked, however students are welcome to share them with their teacher and peers.

1. Play outside with family and friends every single day - even in the rain and snow.
2. Play board games.
3. Make your own board game, complete with rules and all game pieces. Play it with family members to get comfortable talking about it, then bring it to school to share with teacher and peers. This will help with number concepts in math and cooperative play along with many other concepts.
4. Play dice games every day –search online for games or make up your own then teach others how to play – good for number concepts in math and taking turns.
5. Play games with cards every day – search online for games or make up your own, then teach others how to play - good for number concepts in math and taking turns.
6. Read every day – attend the public library for books of interest.
7. Create, write and illustrate a book on topic of choice. Practice reading and talking about it to family and friends at home before bringing it to school to share teacher and peers.
8. Bake together - following recipes is great for numeracy and literacy skills

Our classroom is continuing to talk about bucket filling from the book "How Full is Your Bucket". We are working at understanding that our actions affect not only ourselves, but also the people around us.  We are learning about the importance of kind words and how they affect others.

We welcomed Ms. Wills into our classroom this month.  She is a year 2 education student from Mount Royal University. She will be in our classroom on Thursday mornings.  The students love when she does our read alouds.

We are enjoying Music with Ms. Woodward on M/T/W afternoons.  This is the first time that we have had an official music teacher in a while. She helped the students do a lovely job singing at the potluck last week.

- Our first Healthy Hunger school lunch deadline to order is Friday October 18th - The Spooky Hot Lunch is on October 18th at noon (see note that went home)
- No school on Friday Oct. 11th
- Parent/Teacher interviews are Thursday Oct. 10th from 4-7:30, and Friday Oct. 18th from 8am-1pm
